Proposal Abstract:

The Development of an Assessment Model for Information and Communication Technology (ICT)-based Tools/Applications for Destination Managers in Sustainable Tourism Development

Tourism is indeed one of the most dynamic and fastest growing industries in the world and tourism forecasts indicate that its growth is likely to continue. Like most economic activities, tourism has produced negative impacts on the environment which serves as the resource foundation of the industry. These impacts have been given great attention due to increased environmental awareness and the industry is being scrutinised closely from all areas. The industry’s response has been to incorporate the principles of sustainable tourism in tourism policy, planning and delivery. This research is adopting a destination focused perspective and proposes to investigate the information and communication technologies (ICT)-based tools/applications that can be used to manage the impacts of tourism at the destination level. It is hoped that these ICT-based tools/applications might be able to assist destination managers in sustainable tourism development i.e. computer-supported sustainability.

Keywords: sustainable tourism; information communication technology (ICT); ICT-based tools/applications; computer-supported sustainability
